Winter Text Evidence Activities That Actually Work in Third Grade
Winter Text Evidence Made Easy for Third Grade
Teaching students how to find and use text evidence can feel challenging, especially in third grade. Many students want to answer questions from memory or personal opinion instead of returning to the text. Winter is the perfect time to slow down, build strong routines, and give students repeated practice with citing evidence in a meaningful way.
That is exactly why I created this winter themed nonfiction text evidence resource designed specifically for third graders.
Why Text Evidence Matters in Third Grade
Text evidence is a foundational skill that supports reading comprehension, writing, and test prep. When students learn how to point to specific details in a passage, they begin to understand that answers come from the text, not guesses.
In third grade, students are expected to:
Ask and answer questions using details from a text
Identify key details and main ideas
Explain their thinking in writing
Support answers with evidence
Without consistent practice, these skills can feel overwhelming. A predictable structure and engaging topics make all the difference.
Why a Winter Theme Works So Well
Winter nonfiction topics naturally grab student interest. Snow, animals, storms, and seasonal changes spark curiosity and background knowledge. When students are interested in what they are reading, they are more likely to reread the text, look for details, and stay engaged in the task.
A winter theme also makes this resource perfect for:
January and February literacy centers
Winter test prep and review
Whole group close reading lessons
Small group intervention or enrichment
Built In Differentiation Without Extra Prep
One of the biggest challenges teachers face is meeting the needs of all readers at once. This resource includes two reading levels for every passage, allowing you to differentiate while teaching the same skill and topic.
You can:
Use the lower reading level for support or intervention
Use the higher reading level for on level practice or challenge
Mix levels within small groups or centers
Because the structure stays consistent, students know exactly what to do, no matter which level they are working on.
How I Use These Passages in the Classroom
I love using these passages in a variety of ways throughout the winter.
For whole group lessons, we read a passage together and practice underlining or highlighting sentences that answer each question. We talk about which details best support our answers and why.
For independent practice, students use the passages during reading response time, morning work, or early finisher activities. They answer in complete sentences and use sentence stems to cite evidence.
For centers or small groups, I print and laminate the passages so students can work with partners and focus on identifying strong evidence.
These passages also work well digitally. Students can highlight, add text boxes, or leave comments directly on the passage in Google Slides or Seesaw.
