DIY Birthday Cups: A Simple Way to Celebrate Student Birthdays
Easy & Inexpensive Birthday Cups That Make Students Feel Extra Special
One of my absolute favorite classroom traditions is celebrating student birthdays with birthday cups—a simple, fun, and affordable way to make each child feel extra loved on their special day. If you're looking for a low-prep birthday idea that adds excitement to your classroom, this is it!
Why Birthday Cups?
As teachers, we’re always balancing time, budget, and creativity. I wanted a birthday treat that was:
-
Easy to assemble
-
Inexpensive
-
Reusable year after year
-
And most importantly, exciting for students!
These birthday cups check all the boxes—and the best part? They look adorable lined up and ready to go!
What You’ll Need:
Here’s what I use to put them together:
-
Tall Starbucks frappuccino cups (mine were donated by a friend who works there—check with your local store!)
-
Shredded paper confetti (I used Astrobrights paper in my home shredder for a pop of color)
-
Birthday stickers (I made mine with my Cricut)
-
Birthday bracelets
-
Small squishy toys
-
Editable birthday bookmarks (I created these and they're available in my TPT store)
-
Crazy straws for a finishing touch
Each item adds a little fun and flair without breaking the bank.
How to Assemble:
-
Fill each cup halfway with the paper confetti. This makes the cup colorful and gives it some structure.
-
Stick on a birthday sticker. I add this to the outside of the cup for a personal touch.
-
Add in a birthday bracelet for a wearable surprise.
-
Toss in a squishy. These are always a student favorite!
-
Slide in a bookmark. I designed editable ones so you can add your name, a student message, or even your classroom theme. You can grab them here in my TPT store!
-
Pop on the lid and add a crazy straw. Instant birthday joy!
I like to prep a batch at the beginning of the year and store them in a birthday bin so I’m ready whenever the celebrations pop up!
Want to Make Your Own?
You can grab my editable birthday bookmarks right here on TPT! They're easy to personalize and print, and they add a meaningful touch to your birthday gift. You can edit them in powerpoint, or as shown below, write your name by hand after you print.
